PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear Memphis Calligraphy Guild Members,

When I was a little girl one of the favorite games we played in our neighborhood was “Mother,
may I?” In this game, players must ask “Mother, may I?” and receive a “yes” before following any
instructions from mother.
This month, you may give yourself permission to spend as much time as you desire to work
on your calligraphy. It can be any hand, any tool, any medium, anything you desire. You have
permission to be as free and creative as you possibly can be. Let yourself enjoy the process and
don’t be judgmental about your work. Go with the creative flow and be proud of the progress
you make.
The following calligraphers were selected to be published in the Annual Juried Issue of
Letter Arts Review (LAR). Visit their websites for inspiration!

Japanese calligrapher and linguist Sayaka Yoneya perhaps sums it up the best….

“I enjoy soaking in the sea of words through reading, writing or just gazing. There, images
sometimes spring to my mind. When that turns into calligraphy pieces, I feel happiness.”

All the best,
Laurie Yeandel
